For nearly 25 years now, Extremis has been developing ground-breaking indoor and outdoor furniture, always with a fresh perspective and from the desire to outdo existing designs.

For 25 years now, the producer has been aware of the impact of his objects on the surroundings. With its new brand book, Extremis sought to broadcast and further highlight its sustainable thinking.

Our starting point was the Shaker quote Extremis likes to use as inspiration: ‘Don't make something unless it is both made necessary and useful; but if it is both necessary and useful, don't hesitate to make it beautiful.’ Because sustainability in essence requires a time factor, we shifted the focus to the impact we have on subsequent generations: ‘If you are going to leave tracks for the next generation, then let them be valuable tracks.' This variation fits neatly within the Shaker philosophy, and gave us the reference point we needed to process the sustainability narrative of Extremis into a brand book.

What does ‘impact’ mean exactly for Extremis? Initially it refers to the raison d’être of each object: the furniture producer seeks to address a need, otherwise a new design makes no sense.

This is a rule of thumb that aligns with the Shaker thinking. However, the manufacturer also produces furniture to inspire, to spark the creativity of future generations. Furthermore, the choice of materials determines the impact of Extremis: using sustainable raw materials, the furniture manufacturer produces sustainable furniture that will serve its owners for many years. Its final essential interpretation of impact is beauty – Extremis designs stylish, tasteful furniture that transcends time and space.

We collated the sustainability values of Extremis into an inspirational brand book where text and imagery support one another and transmit the basic thinking of Extremis.
